2010 FL-ASTA Solo String Competition Winners

The 2010 Florida ASTA Solo String Competition took place on Saturday, Oct. 23rd in the Fine Arts Center on the campus of the University of North Florida.  Contestants from Miami, Tampa, Orlando and Jacksonville competed in both the Senior and Junior Divisions.  The judge for the competition was Mr. Aaron Krosnick, a long-time member of FL-ASTA and a now-retired violin professor from Jacksonville University.

The winners of the 2010 FL-ASTA Solo String Competition are:

Haruka Kobayashi, senior violin --- Student of Dr. Simon Shiao
Likai He, Junior violin—Student of Sergiu Schwartz
Samuel Casseday, junior double bass—Student of Laurie and Kevin Casseday

The winners will submit their recordings to the National Semi-Final Round, with a chance of being invited to compete in the Final Round during the 2011 ASTA National Conference next March in Kansas City, MO.   Only three or four contestants from each instrument category are invited to the Final Round, and for the last few years, Florida has enjoyed a very strong showing, with cellist Matthew Allen, the Florida Junior Division representative winning the 2008 National Competition.   Mr. Krosnick was very impressed with the strong level of musicianship displayed by the contestants, and feels that this year’s group will again represent Florida well on the national level.

The three winners from this year’s competition have been invited to perform for the FL-ASTA breakfast in January during the FMEA Conference.

The Solo String Competition is held every two years, and the format has been to alternate between live auditions and recorded auditions.  The next Florida State competition will be during the fall of 2012, and will be by recording.  Repertoire for the competition is generally posted in the spring of the competition year, and can be found on the ASTA Solo Competition website.
